Children develop at their own pace, but there are key milestones they typically reach within specific age ranges. These milestones are grouped into areas like social and emotional, language and communication, cognitive, and physical development. Below is a general guide based on CDC guidelines:
 
Infancy (0-12 Months)
  • Social and Emotional: Smiling at people, calming themselves, and showing interest in faces.
  • Language and Communication: Responding to sounds, cooing, babbling, and saying simple words like “mama” or “dada.”
  • Cognitive: Watching objects move, bringing things to their mouth, and showing curiosity about their surroundings.
  • Physical Development: Holding their head up, rolling over, sitting up, crawling, and beginning to walk by their first birthday
Toddlerhood (1-3 Years)
  • Social and Emotional: Showing independence, imitating others, and beginning to play alongside other children.
  • Language and Communication: Saying several words, pointing to things they want, and using short phrases or sentences.
  • Cognitive: Exploring objects in different ways, following simple instructions, and beginning to sort shapes and colors.
  • Physical Development: Walking independently, running, climbing, and starting to throw or kick a ball.

Preschool Age (3-5 Years)

  • Language and Communication: Speaking clearly enough for most people to understand, telling stories, and following multi-step directions.
  • Cognitive: Pretending during play, recognizing letters and numbers, and understanding basic counting.
  • Physical Development: Hopping, standing on one foot, and beginning to refine motor skills like cutting with scissors.

School Age (6-12 Years)

  • Social and Emotional: Developing friendships, managing emotions independently, and participating in group activities.
  • Language and Communication: Carrying conversations, reading and writing at grade level, and understanding humor or sarcasm.
  • Cognitive: Solving more complex problems, thinking critically, and showing curiosity about new topics.
  • Physical Development: Refining motor skills, participating in sports, and improving coordination.

Every child grows and develops at their own pace, but there are some key developmental milestones they typically reach within certain age ranges. If your child is not meeting these milestones, it could be an early sign of a developmental delay. Early recognition is critical because it allows for timely support and intervention.
Here are some potential signs to look for:
By 6 Months:
  • Doesn’t respond to sounds or turn toward voices.
  • Has trouble holding their head steady or making eye contact.
  • Shows no interest in objects or people around them.
By 12 Months:
  • Doesn’t crawl, stand with support, or attempt to pull themselves up.
  • Doesn’t babble, wave, or point to communicate.
  • Doesn’t show affection or react to familiar faces.
By 18 Months:
  • Can’t walk independently or is unsteady on their feet.
  • Has difficulty imitating actions or responding to simple requests.
  • Has little or no interest in interactive play or exploring their surroundings.
By 24 Months:
  • Says fewer than 50 words or doesn’t combine words into simple phrases.
  • Struggles to follow basic instructions or shows limited interest in others.
  • Displays repetitive behaviors or extreme difficulty adapting to changes.
